Tuna Diet?

I think this one came as a recommendation from a friend’s roomate’s ex-roomate’s co-worker who works at 24hr Fitness… so it must be a good idea right?

I was told that if you want to lose weight REAL FAST… eat nothing but Tuna and drink water and juice. Wait a second, that sounds an aweful lot like the Atkins diet huh? I’m sure I’m missing something but anything else and it just wouldn’t sound interesting anymore right?

Just out of stupid curiousity, I wondered how many day I could go on this diet. 2 days! Tuna first thing in the morning can make you feel plenty sick. Think of a hangover except you just don’t puke.

My cat has never loved me more.

I tried the high protein low carb diet and lost 20 kg, then i stopped and put on 11kg, but20 is not what i wanted to lose, i was 123kg but used to be 73kg, thats want i still want and i’m determined. I reduced my carbs from about 800 to about 200. Somewhere, i heard that a study shown that 30 carbs a day lost about 2kg or 3kg a week i think, but then recently thinking about i thought what about nearly no carbs a day by eating just tuna, and maybe some eggs and cheese to make it a bit more interesting, but just tuna has no fat and no carbs hardly , less then one it says on the tin, tell me what you think about this im looking for advice.

I ate nothing but tuna, lettuce, and drank diet coke for three weeks straight, when I was in college and lost 27lbs in 3 weeks. However, I did exercise once a day too.

A bit more then 4 kilo’s a week wow. Tuna, eggs , cheese and meat, these things have near to no carbs, going on that i should plenty of weight, but i’ll need to take multi- vitamins and fibre tablets, an artifical diet, i don’t eat fruit and vegetables anyway i never have, i’m still living. Exercise i used to do a lot of that but now ive stopped i guess its a good idea to start again. No carbs for first few days you’ll have no energy but then you start to use your fat stores, and have plenty of energy. But keeping this up is the main thing.

I think all of you are going to die of various malnutrition-related illnesses, or failing that, are going to keep chasing fad diets forever.

You will keep wondering why it’s so hard to keep weight off, when what you really need is to cut your fat intake and get more exercise.

13
melissa
March 24th, 2004 8:34 am

I seriously doubt I could die of malnutrition, I am 60 lbs overwieght, I have enough fat stored to last me about 3 months without any food. I just don’t have enough willpower to starve myself. So, tuna and water will have to do. That’s the closest I can get to starving. Actually, today is day 3 and I am really not hungry. I drink water when I get hungry. I wish I did have time to go walking every day, I work and have 5 kids, never make time.

Good for you! Now you just have to STAY on your new eating plan.

Working a new eating habit into your existing lifestyle is very difficult. Behavioral scientists tell us that it takes around 21 days to establish a new habit… make a calendar and mark it for every day, couting down to the end of 21 days. Don’t focus on what happens after that… the idea is that when you get to 21 days, it will be much easier to follow your new pattern, because now it will be a habit!

Starving yourself will not work, even if you could keep it up, for the following reason: when your body gets less calories, it thinks it is in a famine, and your metabolism slows down. This will make you feel sluggish, tired, and depressed, while burning little less energy, and a LOT less fat. Eating the same amount of food now will result in more fat, which your body will be trying to store because it thinks it is in danger of starving. Most of the weight you lose will NOT be fat, but rather glucose and water… both of which will come back as soon as you leave the diet. You would literally have to diet forever to keep that lost weight off.

A more reasonable solution is the sustainable one- watch your fat intake and don’t starve yourself. Make sure you aren’t hungry, but only eat until you are no longer hungry. Then stop. Don’t eat food that is high in fat.

As I’m sure you know, watching what you eat is only part of getting in shape. Getting some exercise is the other part. Going to the gym would be ideal, but it’s not the only thing you can do- you can do little things during your normal routine to burn more calories. For example, you can walk with your kids to the park, or go on a family walk to the store. With 5 pairs of hands you can carry a lot of groceries back home.

One last thing- burning fat will only happen when your heart rate is elevated for extended periods- you can’t just do a 10 second sprint and expect to burn fat. Those walks to the store are looking a lot mroe attractive, aren’t they!

I’m telling you all, the tuna diet works. I work at a fitness club and I know what I’m talking about. First, let me say, its a hard diet. In this country, our body is hooked on sugar. Sugar has become the main part of our diet, believe it or not, since we were all kids. BTW, most bread you eat, when broken down in the body, turns into sugar. Add that with all the sweats, sodas, chips, etc, we are eating pounds of sugar everyday. So you muct keep in mind a couple things

1)The first 3-5 days your body will be going through withdrawl. It will be just like a 3 year crackhead who suddenly stops taking crack. You will have illusions, fantasies, and dreams about eating a piece of bread or sweat. Like nicotine, your body is shocked, doesn’t know what to do at first, and craves the sugar. So, starting is the hardest part. Once you get past the 4th day, and your body stays to itself “okay, we know we’re not getting any sugar today, lets go into our reserves”, then you will feel better

2)For this diet to work properly, you must stick to water, diet soda, tuna. I heard someone say they eat some fruit w/their tuna in the morning. YOU DUMBASS, sorry but I must be rough, that defeats the whole purpose. Fruits contain nothing but sugar, healthy sugar, but sugar notheless. You may loose 1/2 lb a week. Anymore and you’r lying to yourself. This diet, if done right, can enable anyone to loose 3-5 lbs a week. Immediately, the second day, you should notice your pants arn’t as tight. Also, you can put mayonnaise, and eggs, salt, and pepper in your tuna. Trust me, after a couple days, you will need it to make the tuna go down. But have 2 days out the week, make it a weekend, where you eat NOTHING BUT PLAIN TUNA AND WATER. Yes, I know, its digusting, and you will learn to hate tuna, but in a couple weeks you will thank me. E-mail if you have questions. I like helping people loose weight, but I don’t sugar coat it.

I lost my 31 lbs eating high protein, low carb. So, I think I can do the only tuna and water for a while. I am going to challenge myself to 21 days. I am 5′4″ and weigh 133lbs right now. An extra 15 off would be me where I would like to be. I have 5 kids all under the age of 12, I need to keep up with and ibn shape for.

Dieticians Question Benefits Of Popular Atkins Diet Program
By Rita Brhel
rita.brhel@yankton.net

For many who are looking to take off a few extra pounds gained during the holidays, the Atkins diet is a dream come true.

Few dieters can turn down a menu that includes greasy bacon, juicy steaks, scrambled eggs and relatively few vegies.

While the popular diet seems to have a miracle weight-loss effect, South Dakota nutrition experts warn that losing weight fast via the Atkins diet isn’t necessarily healthy.

“The biggest misconception is that people can get on these diets until they lose their weight and then go back to eating how they did before,” said Dora Lynn Jarvis, registered dietician of Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton. “However, for these diets to work, they have to be a lifetime commitment. Once they get off the high-protein, low-carb program, they gain just as much weight as they lost during the diet and some extra pounds.”

Jarvis said she didn’t know one person who had been on the Atkins diet for more than a year. Most people stayed on the diet only long enough to lose their pounds.

“I wouldn’t recommend it, because it’s designed to be a lifetime program. Most people can’t stand to be on it forever because of its nutritional imbalance,” she added.

The Atkins diet, circulated in the 1970s and 1990s, was developed by Dr. Robert C. Atkins and is considered a ground-breaking, although highly controversial, weight loss program. It consists of four phases.

The first phase, the Induction Diet, lasts two weeks, during which dieters can only consume 20 grams of carbohydrates per day.

Because many food groups contain carbohydrates, including fruits, breads and cereals, vegetables and dairy, Jarvis said numerous vitamins and minerals are limited with the lower intake of carbs.

“A nutrient analysis of a sample menu shows that during the induction phase, dieters consume only 16 percent of their daily value of fiber, less than two-thirds of the nutrients that they should be getting,” he said. “They are also getting twice the saturated fat they should be getting each day, and three times the cholesterol.”

The second phase, called Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL), increases the carb intake to 60 grams per day, although 35 to 40 grams is recommended.

“Again, this phase is deficient in vitamins and minerals,” Jarvis said.

OWL is where dieters start losing weight. The length of the phase depends upon the individual, as that person is to remain in the phase until he or she is within five to 10 pounds of his or her target weight. The ideal weight loss rate is one pound each week. Therefore, a person hoping to lose 50 pounds can expect to be in the OWL phase for at least 50 weeks, or a little more than a year.

The third phase, Pre-Maintenance, lasts two to three months and is a transition from major weight loss to target weight maintenance. During this time, dieters’ weight-loss rates slow to less than one pound gone per week.

Dieters are allowed one deviation from the prescribed menu two times per week, such as a baked potato added to supper.

“Once again, this diet is low in fiber, vitamins and minerals, and high in saturated fat and cholesterol,” Jarvis said.

The fourth phase, Maintenance, begins when the dieter reaches his or her target weight. This phase lasts for the remainder of the person’s lifetime.

During this time, the person can eat as much as 90 grams of carbohydrates per day, although the typical person must limit the carb intake to 40 to 60 grams per day to maintain their target weight.

“While 90 grams of carbs per day is better than the limitations of the other phases, it is still deficient in nutrients,” Jarvis said.

Federal guidelines recommend that at least 130 grams of complex carbohydrates are consumed per day. “Carbs serve as fuel for the brain,” Jarvis said. “I don’t think it’d be 130 grams if it didn’t need to be.

“There are just so many exclusions,” she added. “For example, people on the Atkins diet can’t have milk, which cuts down on the calcium and vitamin D they receive. While they can have cheese, this doesn’t contain vitamin D, which is necessary to absorb and utilize the calcium. Most vitamins and minerals are needed in order for others to benefit the body. The Atkins diet cuts out so many of these.”

The Atkins diet does promote the use of a multi-vitamin, Jarvis said. However, this nutritional supplement still doesn’t contain all the missing necessary nutrients excluded by the diet plan.

There is one good thing about the Atkins diet, Jarvis said: It recommends olive oil be used as a fat. Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat and is healthy for the heart.

However, the Atkins doesn’t give any limits on fat or calorie intake. “Its only concern is the number of carbohydrates consumed,” Jarvis said. “It’s basis is fat.”

She said children, teenagers and young adults still growing should definitely not be on the Atkins diet, because of its lack in calcium and other essential nutrients.

According to Atkins Nutritionals Inc., Ronkonkoma, N.Y., its weight-loss program is a corrective diet that reduces the intake of refined carbohydrates. The organization claims weight gain can be attributed to an over-abundance of insulin, which is stimulated by carbohydrates. Atkins Nutritionals says the American diet is grossly imbalanced in that the typical person consumes 200 to 300 grams of carbs per day.

The organization counters critics’ claims that the diet lacks in essential vitamins and minerals, as long as the program is done correctly. Dieters that include at least three cups of green, leafy salad vegetables and unlimited amount of unprocessed animals foods should have no problem with nutrient deficiency, according to Atkins Nutritionals. It maintains that the healthiest carbohydrates are those found in vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes — although these are to be limited throughout the entire program.

Despite Atkins Nutritionals’ defense, Sherry Peer, a South Dakota registered dietician, said that while fast weight loss can be beneficial for some conditions, such as morbid obesity, the Atkins diet should not be used long-term.

“It is a low-fiber, very high-fat, unbalanced diet that contains low amount of water-soluble vitamins, calcium and vitamin D,” said Peer, also a certified diabetes nutrition educator and licensed nutritionist of Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls. “There are a number of risks, including colorectal cancer because of high red meat diets and low fiber intake; and cardiovascular disease from high protein and fat intake. It is also not the diet for those at risk for renal disease and type 1 diabetes because of the extra stress put on the kidneys by ketosis, high BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and rapid weight loss. It may also cause more kidney stones.”

While the Atkins diet does its job, it is never good to nearly cut out whole food groups, Peer said. “In addition, carbs are good for the body and all contain needed vitamins and minerals, fiber and iron,” she added.

Peer said not to be fooled by the Atkins “miracle diet.” Much of the Atkins Induction phase is fluid loss instead of fat.

“Studies show that weight loss from the Atkins is about the same as from other, healthier diet-exercise combinations,” Peer said. “The problem is, if the dieter isn’t exercising, he or she isn’t strengthening his or her cardiovascular system which is critical with a high-protein diet. Many people depend just on the diet to lose weight, when exercise is also needed to keep themselves healthy. And, if a person isn’t consuming carbohydrates and then exercises, he or she is going to be burning muscle for energy instead of fat.”

The best diets are those that lose weight at the rate that it took the body to gain it, she added.

“A good diet should have a high intake of fruits and vegetables and lower intake of red meat and fats,” Jarvis said.

“Balanced diets are the key to healthy weight loss and maintenance,” Peer added.

Good diets are the Weight Watchers plan, which focuses on increasing fiber and certain nutritional points, and the South Beach diet, which allows for more fruits and vegetables than the Atkins diet, and limits portions of fat.

“Any diet is a lifetime commitment,” Jarvis said.

Peer recommends people look at more than food selection when trying to lose weight. “With diets, you’ll only lose the weight,” she said. “It won’t change anything on the inside. People are always counting something, whether it’s calories, fat grams or carbs. They’re also measuring lost pounds and inches. But, these don’t do anything for who’s inside the body. Losing pounds or inches won’t help to boost a low self-esteem.”

i also found this to be interesting i love chicken and tuna but now i dont think chicken will be in my diet……….
There’s No Room for Chicken in a Healthy Diet
By Kristine Kieswer

Q: Why has chicken become so popular?

A: Unbeknownst to them, chickens have played center stage in a grand marketing campaign by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and chicken farmers aimed to promote chicken as some sort of “health food.” With 9 billion chickens eaten each year in the U.S., it appears many people have been swayed. However, an honest look at the nutritional value of chicken reveals quite a different picture.

Q: Is chicken really low in fat?

A: Not even close. A 3.5-ounce piece of broiled lean flank steak is 56 percent fat as a percentage of calories. Chicken contains nearly the same at 51 percent. Even when the skin is removed, dark meat is thrown away, and a non-fat cooking method is used, chicken is still 23 percent fat. Compare that with the fat in a baked potato (1 percent), steamed cauliflower (6 percent), and baked beans (4 percent), and any ideas that chicken is a health food melt away. Fancy packages can’t disguise the fact that chicken and all meats are muscles, and muscles are made of protein and fat.

Q: Do I need the protein in chicken?

A: We all need some protein, and there is more than enough in grains, beans, and vegetables. The amount of protein consumed by Americans who eat meat has elevated their risks for serious health problems. Years ago, we believed there was no such thing as protein overload, but now we know it is a major culprit in calcium loss, causing osteoporosis. Too much protein also puts a strain on the kidneys, forcing them to expel extra nitrogen in the urine, increasing the risk for kidney disease. Also, the combination of fat, protein, and carcinogens found in cooked chicken creates troubling risks for colon cancer. A healthy vegetarian diet contains just the right balance of protein—not too much and not too little.

Q: What’s NOT in chicken?

A: Chicken, no matter how smartly advertised, will never contain fiber, complex carbohydrates, or vitamin C. Fiber is the heavy-duty cleanser of the digestive tract, carrying away excess hormones filtered from the blood, while it lowers cholesterol—naturally. Complex carbohydrates, found only in plants, are low in calories and boost metabolism, aiding in weight loss.

Vitamin C and other antioxidants are vital cancer fighters. When chicken meat takes the place of vegetables, grains, and fruits on your plate, your supply of vitamins dwindles. Chicken not only gives you a load of fat you don’t want, it displaces metabolism- and immune-boosting foods that are essential to good health and weight control.

Q: Where do heterocyclic amines come in?

A: Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) are potent carcinogens produced from creatine, amino acids, and sugars in poultry and other meats during cooking. These same chemicals are found in tobacco smoke and are 15 times more concentrated in grilled chicken than beef.

HCAs may be one of the reasons meat-eaters have much higher colon cancer rates—about 300 percent higher compared to vegetarians.

Q: Is chicken…poisonous?!

A: With live salmonella bacteria growing inside one in every three packages of chicken, it is making a lot of people sick. Although deaths from salmonella poisonings sometimes make the evening news, millions more cases that cause flu-like symptoms go unaccounted. Salmonella poisoning can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and low-grade fever lasting for several days. When it spreads to the blood and other organs, it can be fatal—and is, for as many as 9,000 people every year.

The new kid on the chopping block—campylobacter—infects as many as two-thirds of all prepackaged chicken. Salmonella and campylobacter have become increasingly common because modern factory farms crowd thousands of chickens in tightly confined spaces, where excrement and other forms of bacteria spread contaminants.

Q: Does chicken have the same amount of cholesterol as beef?

A: Yes, nearly. Four ounces of beef—just the size of a deck of cards—and four ounces of chicken both contain about 100 milligrams of cholesterol, and the cholesterol from chicken does just as good of a job at clogging arteries and causing heart disease. The human body produces cholesterol on its own and never needs outside sources. Each added dose contributes to artery blockages, leading to heart attacks, strokes, and other serious problems.

Spaghetti, tomatoes, baked beans, bananas, broccoli, and all other plant foods are free of cholesterol and will never contribute to coronary disease and related illnesses.

Fruits and other foods not mentioned on this list
Click here to go to the site of the USDA for the charts of the fruits not mentioned on this list.

Evaluation of the charts – Fruit compared with animal food.

Energy
When you look at this table you see that one banana and a few strawberries give you as much as energy as an entrecote! You will not feel as fulfilled, but your body really can extract as much of energy out of fruit.

Proteins – Fat – Sugar
As the energy fruit contains consists of sugars the fruit is digested in 30 minutes. This chemical process has no toxic waste products that are difficult to remove from the body and it even stimulates the removing of toxic elements.

The energy animal products contain consists of fat and proteins. Because of the high amount of proteins it is digested in 6-8 hours. This chemical process does produce toxic waiste-products that have to be removed from your body.

Fibers
Another remarkable difference is that fruit contains a substantial amount of fibers while animal based products don’t contain any. Fibers are very important.

Water
The water percentage of fruit (80%) is higher than that of meat (15%) and comes more near the water percentage of the human body (80%).

This sounds like a great idea and I am going to do it…Im just worried about all I hear about mercury in fish…anybody else? Also If anyone else out there has done this before….I’m just curious as to how much you have lost on it before and possibly what exercises you did.
Thanks

I have gone on a modified atkins twice. The first time i lost 8.5 pounds in 7 days jsut watching tv. I am recovering from a hoceky injury and didnt get an ounce of exercise and still lost. Now im on the tuna diet, jsut remember although u can add relish and mayo, make sure its dill relish and not sweet relish(sugar relish). Try to stick to only water and diet drinks with Splenda in them….NOT diet soda. When you finally get sick of this diet, PLEASE dont GO on a CARB rush….introduce them slowly as possible, over a week or so, or you will gain most of your weight back….I know this from personal experience. Your body with horde the carbs when u first introduce them back into your diet, so be careful. Please email me with any questions or comments….Good luck

A co-worker and myself are beginning this tuna diet on Monday. We are really interest in knowing if this works for real. Can we add anything to the diet or is it just tuna, water, and diet soda? What about juice, or is that too much sugar? We are desprerate. HELP!!

For the “interested eater”, just as mentioned in some of the other posts, you can add things to the tuna, but make sure that they are low in sugar. (ie. Mayo, dill relish, or even mustard) BUT as far as juice….big no no. If you read the nutrition information on the back of pretty much any juice…including natural juice, the sugar is usually anywhere from 20 grams of sugar and more. Diet soda is ok, but I would recommend sticking with water most of the time….its better for you anyway.

This is actually going well for me. I haven’t been craving other foods like I thought I would be. KB, let me know when you start or if you’ve started. I thought I’d hang out on this board, so others can see my achievement or failure. I will be honest no matter how I do. But, so far so good. I have lost another 1.2 lbs. I am at 128.8. I started at an even 131lbs. So for a review, I have lost 3.2 lbs in 5 days. I am drinking a full 16oz bottle of water every 2 hours….at 6 bottles a day, I am at 96oz. of water a day. The tuna I am using is the Starkist tuna from the pouches. It comes in a few different flavor however, I am not eating the sweet and spicy flavor because of the sugar content. The hickory-smoked is my favorite. I also am eating the Pink Salmon in the pouch by Chicken of the Sea and the Albacore in a pouch by Starkist. The packets are a little high, but it’s still cheaper than lunch bought somewhere. I am eating about a 1/2 pouch about 6 times a day. The pouches are different sizes, but only by about 2 oz. Another helpful hint is to refrigerate the pouches before eating…nothing worse than room-tempature fish of any kind! Hope this helps KB and anyone else who is starting this this week. I would love to hear others experience or have others join me. I am going to try to continue to do this from today another 2 weeks. If anyone gets a chance to post here, please do.

April 26th, 2004 11:52 am

I started Jan 12 of this year on the South Beach Diet which really helped. I was 167 lbs at that time, so I have lost 35lbs since then. I am just trying to get the last 10 to 15lbs off because I seem to come to a stand-still on the SBD. Good luck today starting and keep me posted. My initials are KB too!

Kim
April 26th, 2004 12:24 pm

Sorry, not a coffee drinker. I hope someone can answer your question. I know on South Beach you can drink it, so I think it would be okay. For a lot of people when they cut back on their food intake, caffeine actually makes them hungrier.

April 26th, 2004 3:49 pm

THanks kim…your quite the inspiration….I way about as much as you used to, so I know that I can do it as well…thanks for the support. And I believe that you can drink plain coffee as well…it doesn’t contain much sugar, but it does contain caffine, sometimes when a person gets off of their “caffine high” the glucose levels drop and they “crave” sugary foods more, if you can overcome cravings than you should be ok, because just drinking the coffee won’t hurt…but remember…too much of it could be harmful

Down to 128 even today. How is everyone? I’m still sticking with it. Feel great! Did get a bit(actually a lot) hungry yesterday around 3 and ate 1/2 a pack of the hickory-smoked salmon by Starkist and a 6oz can of tuna. Hunger sub-sided as quickly as it came after that. Keep drinking the water… it helps!

40
KB
April 30th, 2004 3:36 pm

When it comes to sugar cravings, that has always been a hard thing for me. It is not easy to lessen cravings with a diet that is this restrictive, BUT what I have found to be helpful for myself is to sit down and reflect on it. How did you feel after you ate those sweets? Did eating them make you happier? If so, for how long were you happy? I have found, after countless acts of binging on sweets, that I am never satisfied. And afterward I NEVER feel good about myself. It is never worth it when I sit down and think about it. So, though I am still struggling, it is much easier for me to not give into my cravings this way.

I know that I have probably said enough on this site but I just wanted to throw a lil concept out there to think about. I am totally stoked that there is a way out there for people to loose weight fast, BUT as always, if you go back to the way you used to eat, you will gain it all back, so gradually add more “good” carbs back in when your ready, ALSO another thing to keep in mind is the fact that if you loose weight TOO fast…Depending on your age…you might get excess skin. Now I don’t really have to worry about that because I am still young, but just some advice for thoughs out there who it may concern….I have heard cases and seen cases (my mother) that end up with some excess skin. Exercise is ALWYAS a way to lessen that effect, but you still might end up with some. OH and CONGRATS on the 5 ibs in a week….thats awesome!

47
DH
May 12th, 2004 2:13 am

Thank you and I strongly agree with you KB on the fact of gaining all the weight back if not continuing this eating pattern and I also can name a few carbs that has helped me such as yams, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. I would only recommend anyone to eat a small or medium sized portion of the three, if any.

I eat a banna with tuna in th emorning, run in the gym for 1 hour. and i have lost 18 pounds and fained 4 pounds in muscle over 2 months. I ti will take a long time, but losing more than 1-2 pounds a week is unhelathy.

Hello everyone! I never knew this “tuna diet” was so big. I am going to Mexico for vacation in July and I have been saying for months that I was going to lose weight. I am 25 5′6 and weigh 145 to 150 pounds (it fluxuates) This may not be big to alot of people out there but I gained it all in my belly. My mother asked me if I was pregnant the other day! So I really am going to go on this diet. I never herd of it before I thought I dreamed it up myself! I see people leaving comments about people going on fad diets, losing weight and then gaining it back. I like healthy food and I am sure after I lose the quick weight I can start a healthy eating habit. I’ll let you know if I lose any weight.

To answer the Mercury question:

The potential danger from eating tuna is limited to children and women who are, or may soon be, pregnant, because mercury in very low amounts is harmful only in early years of development. According to David W.K. Acheson, chief medical coordinator for the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, the possible harm from mercury in fish is not changed by whether, or how, the fish is cooked.

wow, just heard about this diet from someone at work and i looked it up and it sounds interesting but should i just stick with a can of tuna for 3 meals a day or what or should i throw in fruit or other things with each meal? The whole point is to cut out sugar so a salad should be fine with it?

Tuna Diet – your all going to die!

Tuna contains mercury (granted not as much as some other fish) but it’s poisen; eating it 3 times a day is asking for trouble.

(I see a lot of people start the diet in january (top of the thread) but you don’t hear from them again… they probebly died!)

June 21st – “California is suing the nation’s three largest canned tuna companies for failing to warn consumers that albacore and light tuna contain mercury, known to cause reproductive harm and cancer.”

I am down to 208lbs from 213 initially it will be mostly water. I am mixing a little chicken breast and or egg. Water is critaical as well as excercise at least an hour a day you dont have to kill youself excercising just get your heart rate up and maintain it for an hour but if you overdue it your body will struggle to get oxygen and it is considered overkill. Also Diet peach snapple is a good alternative to diet soda if you dont care for soda. I ll keep you posted!

Tuna diet or not ~ 1 Hour of excercise a day, drinking water and eating healthy will help you loose weight fast!

If you are looking for a super fast way to loose weight, lookup the ‘miracle soup diet’ – it’s a lot lot healtier than this, and will burn your fast faster!

- Every noticed how on all diets they tell you to excerice daily? thats because excercising burns off the fat – you don’t need to go on a special diet to do that!

OK,
I have noticed this question alot. “What can you eat on this diet”? Well…essentially you are supposed to just eat tuna. Tuna and mayo, Tuna and whatever else you like in it as long as it has no sugar. You can also use this diet as a part of a low-carb diet and incorporate eggs and other meats in with it along with low carb veggies. this is a rather versitile diet, but for the raw and raunchy fast weight loss, the tuna diet is what it is…Tuna. Plain and simple. Tuna and water and exercise…oh my… :)

Hi,
I started aslo with tuna diet, and after two days I already feel better at least. I wonder, is it ok to take some lettuce or cucomber together with tuna? I checked, they have only 2.2 and 1.8 grams of carbs per 100 grams, so it seems to be very low, and tuna is going down much better then without any additions.

Erika – Please keep these things in mind. . .you are doing the right thing by getting lots of exercise – good for you! Combine that with eating healthy, and you should see the weight come off slowly, but consistently. And I do not mean the ‘tuna diet’ as eating healthy. Healthy would be a combination of proteins, fruits and veggies and healthy carbs (found in vegetables). Tuna is healthy, but not in itself. You don’t want to become malnourished, and you don’t want the weight to come back. If you want to email me directly, I’m at tracyeggleston@sbcgloal.net. I wish you the best of luck!

Hey I just have a silly question.
If you are trying to lose weight why would you drink lots of water. since that would be the first thing you lose, water weight, then you put it back on. It sounds like a losing battle.
can some one anwser that for me?

WOW! good question I never though of that. Well drinking water has no calorie no carbs like soda and juices do. Plus they always say drink lots of water and ecercise, what you do when you execise you sweat, what do you sweat WATER!

87
chris
July 22nd, 2004 7:56 am

Yeah I understand you sweat but you are sweating out all the water you just drank isn’ it kind of like filling a cup up but with a hole in it?
the water goes in then the water comes out. why can’t I just not drink as much water then the weight I would be lose would actually be weight I want to lose instead of water weight which is easy to lose? does that make sense?

the reason a person would drink water because it cleans out your system, and if u drink a glass of water before u eat u seem to get full faster. water keeps you hydrated and cleans your digestive tract and helps promote weight loss. dont over do it when you work out.. you ARE supposed to drink during work outs though. so if u feel light during the workout you need more water, if you feel heavy or can hear the water in your tummy when you move you are drinking too much. GOOD LUCK! just drink sips not GULPS! :)

I’m on the tuna diet, that is, Tuna and Rice, Tuna Sandwich (with onions and a little mayo) or just Tuna (I know Tuna with Rice or Bread is like going against the concept, but, it worked anyway), most of the time with lemon juice which is a really good way to have some variety (Not on mornings, though. Never start the day with anything citrus, as I’ve heard), and I have a break off the diet every other week so I don’t grow tired of it (Say, pasta or pizza). See, the good thing is, I fell in love with Tuna, and it wasn’t much of a sacrifice as it was an indulgence. So I guess it wasn’t really a diet, haha. I lost about 60 pounds in a couple of months (Didn’t really count the days, just loved the Tuna). A word of advice though, if you feel good the way you are, don’t diet. Dieting is just about feeling better about yourself. If someone tells you to lose some weight, and you don’t want to, tell them you like being fat. There are lots of more things in the world to worry about than being overweight. But if you think you’ll feel better and more attractive if you’re thinner, by all means, I recommend Tuna.

One more thing, diet coke? Don’t. Water. I’ve stopped drinking soda about 6 years ago, and it makes me feel great for some reason. People have been surviving on water for thousands of years, and there’s no reason why you couldn’t. You’ll lose weight much, much faster.

Hi everyone! First of all, I would like to congratulate and thank all of you who have made the effort to try the Tuna diet and post their results. I WAS a hardcore athlete about 5 years ago. I went on a strict tuna diet while I lifted weights for a period of 30 days. I was able to drop 14 pounds while lowering my body fat percentage from 21% to 17%. I went off the diet after 30 days because my physician and trainer said it would be extremely unhealthy to do so otherwise. My diet consisted of Tuna, Miracle Whip, water and milk. I am getting back into weight lifting and exercise because I am getting a little bit of a college boy beer gut. I will start the diet again tomorrow, and will post my results in a week if anyone is interested. I wish you all the best.

Something I keep hearing you guys talk about here is that “when you get off the tuna diet you gain the weight right back,” and that it’s “unhealthy”. Well, as you all know the purpose of eating tuna is to cut down your carb intake, because all the excess carbs that you don’t burn throughout your day with work or exercise are stored as fat. So if you diet and only get 50 carbs per day, then go off the diet and get 500 carbs per day, obviously the weight will come back because that’s not a healthy level of carbs(unless your a marathon runner or an offensive lineman). Realistically, over 200 carbs a day for a non-active person can lead to weight gain. So what you should take away from this diet is that if you keep eating more than your share of carbs, you’ll gain the weight back, which is really true for any diet. I’ve never heard of a dieter that kept the weight off after going back to their original bad eating habits. Now about the health issue.. I’m 20 years old, run track for a division 1 school, and am on a full ride to do so. Last january my body fat was 9%, which was too high, so my coached told me to reduce my carb intake and up my protien intake. I ate 8 servings of egg beaters in the morning(equivalent to 8 eggs), one serving of oatmeal, 6-8 cans of tuna throughout the day, and a can of green beans before practice. The egg beaters were 8 carbs, oatmeal was about 25 carbs, and the green beans about 20. The green beans provided me with enough energy for practice, and the tuna allowed enough protien for my muscles to stay in shape. My body fat dropped to around 4-5%, and after the first week I was able to adapt somewhat to the lack of carbs and could function normally. One day out of the week, usually saturday, I would allow myself 100-200 carbs just to stop my body from completely adapting. But the point is, with as much running, lifting, and mental stress that was put on my body for the 5 months I was on the diet, and the fact that I was able to function normally (and I ended up stronger and faster) tells me that an unactive or remotely active person will be fine on this kind of diet, getting less than 50 or up to 100 carbs a day. With a good multi-vitamine, and some glucosymine, your body will get enough nutrition, it’s just very mentally taxing.

Well, I came to this site because i recently learned that jim carry went on a diet for his new movie. What he choose as his diet is a can of tuna and an apple per day. Now I dont know in what order her ate them but it said that he lost 60 lbs and had to stop the diet because he was losing more weight then expected and was fearing some damage. So I thought I would try this diet, first i must say it will be hard to eat tuna everyday when others are going out for meals or whatever, and I had puna today plain except a bit of peper and found it hard to eat I am sure i would need to put something in it but mayo is very very unhealthy ( about 20g of fat per teaspoon) so im not sure what to do. Also my head feels heavy.. Hopefully i can lose 27 lbs like the women said above. I usally walk about 8 miles a day but then again my heart rate is not very elivated during this period.

I was on semi-tuna diet for 18 days and lost 13 lbs. I ate it with bread/mayo/Ms.dash, and had other meals throughout the day.
I stopped that diet and gained back to 194 lbs, started the diet 2 days ago and have lost 5 lbs. I did not eat at all the first day, and today I’ve only had one small pouch of the Tuna. I plan on eating one-a-day for a week then gradually upping the amount I eat, 2 for 2nd week, 3, for 3rd. I mix it with Ms. Dash seasoning to help with the taste. I do not recomend not eating at all, its not healthy, however it was my way of seeing instant results and possibly sticking with it the full three weeks this time, well till Christmas anyways. This diet does work, for instant wight loss, but after you stop the diet (3-4 weeks) incorporate tuna as a meal 3-4 times a week instead of something bad for you and you can keep the wieght off

I tried this diet a few months ago and lost 15 lbs. in about 2 1/2 weeks. Not only that, I felt great. It really does work and it works fast. My mistake is that I just got back in my normal routine after I had success and gained most of the weight back. I started again yesterday. I weigh 212 lbs. now and hope to lose 25 lbs. by March of 2005. I’ll post my results as I go, if anyone else is starting this diet I’d like to hear how they are doing as well.

Good luck to everyone trying this diet. I’m making decent progress, I weighed 212 when I started on December 13th and weighed in at 207 today. It’s tough during the Holidays but when I slip instead of throwing in the towel I just accept it and start over before too much harm has been done. It’s a tough diet but when you get a craving just chug some water and down some tuna and the hunger goes away.

i don’t mean to be rude or ignorant but whats life if you cant eat what you want? being skinny isnt all there is to life. being healthy is good. you dont have to starve yourself or eat some gross tuna forever just to lose lbs…just eat normal portions, take the hard way.. (ex. stairs, far parkings, cleaning, cut grass, rake leaves etx.) and you wont have problems, its when you overeat or eat big portions and dont do anything but sit around thats bad…well anyway good luck to everyone hope everything is good.

I did a low carb diet for about three months. My portions were generous but all meat and veggies, and some dairy. After two months and about 30lbs later, I switched to the Tuna diet. It was much easier to “stomach” because I wasn’t going cold turkey from the starches. I ate nothing but tuna, raw broccoli and jalepenos for one month staright. I substituted raw broccoli for tuna once every three days for regularity reason. That combined with only 3 day/exercise plan. I lost over 40lbs. I have now morphed into a low cal, low carb diet that I find relatively easy to maintain after the tuna project.

I started a tuna diet three months ago and have lost 27 lbs. I eat tuna with noodles, no fat mayo, mustard, pickles, a drop of apple cider vinegar and some zesty italian seasoning. It’s the only way I can get the tuna to go down. I also drink water and diet cola. For my sweet craving I eat sugar free jello. I ride my stationary bike for 15 minutes and do my glider for 15 minutes a day. It has worked for me.

Tuna can be used in a diet that isn’t necessarily a “crash diet.” Crash dieting isn’t the best way to go about losing weight. The proper way to pursue weight loss is through a change in life-style that incorporates regular excercise and sleep, balanced healthy nutrition and WILLPOWER! The problem is most people see “crash dieting” as a quick fix to their weight problem. The reality is there are no quick fixes.

I’ve always liked canned tuna and when I started trying to lose weight about a year ago I started eating cans of tuna as part of my new diet (but not just cans of tuna). I post this after losing 100 lbs in 7 months and having kept them off for the last 4 months.

My best advice to those of you who want to lose weight: Eat healthier foods that are low in sugar (with the exception of fruit) and low in fat, drink only water (yes even diet soda and coffee aren’t good for you), excercise on a daily basis, get plenty of sleep and most importantly don’t ever give up! You might plateau, you might want to quit, you might eventually reach your “goal” and think it’s ok to go back to your old habits… but it’s vitally important to the success of your weight and overall health that you make these changes to your life permanent lasting changes.

With that said… good luck to everyone and their attempt to lose weight and live a healthier life.

About the drinking water might cause u to gain weight, and why drink so much of it, well the reason you need lots of water is because the body is made mostly of water,u need 8 to 10 glasses a day, because when u excersice you sweat, and u loose water, if u don’t drink enought water u could dehydrate and that would be bad so u need to drink water. Thanks marsha

Tuna is safe, I work in the COnsumer Affairs Department for a major tuna company. The FDA is only issuing warnings for preganat women, women that are nursing and small children to limit their intakes to 12 ounces per week for the Chunk Light tuna and 6 ounces per week of the Albacore. I am eating tuna for lunch and breakfast everday then chicke or steak and a vegetable for dinner and I never feel hungry! This diet is great.

Well I’ve been to this site before. I’ve tried low carb (which works mind you) but what works best for me is just cutting back. It seems hard, but it is soo doable. It is as simple as NOT eating that candy bar you might have everyday after or before dinner or in between work and play. And in addition to that its taking the stairs instead of the elevator etc. etc. I have struggled with the same things many of you say you are. First you have to except the fact that you are the way you are. Once you get over the depression it is soo much easier to lose the weight and focus because you won’t worry about the fact that you “screwed up your diet”. I did that alot. I would say “ok, today I am dieting”….and once I messed it up, I would just binge because I figured I already messed up the day…and I would “just start over again tomarrow” so I would eat as much as I could that night as a “last night to be bad” if that makes anysense. ANyway, that would be the continuous viscious cycle I would put myself through every night, with a couple good days in between. BUT when I finally accepted the fact that if I make a little mistake..the day isn’t totally screwed..than I was on a step in the right direction. Now I just don’t eat as much as I used to. (I DO NOT STARVE MYSELF!) I just eat less, and avoid processed foods. I also STOP EATING AFTER 7PM! so that I don’t go to sleep with an empty stomach. The main problem was I was looking for INSTANT GRATIFICATION and, to make the weight stay off, that is NOT the way to go. It takes patients. I never thought I would be preaching like this before, I was always the one looking for answers and the fastest way to lose weight. It took me sometime, but I got over it (the instant gratification part) and I am a much happier person now. SO now that I have written a NOVEl hahaha,(I just wanted to give my “2 cents”) I am going to leave you with this cliche but true statement: I had to learn to love myself first before I could do anything in a positive way. When I hated myself, I found comfort in food, when I accepted myself, I didn’t need food. I ate to live, I no longer Live to eat. Haha I sound like Ive had counseling or somethin, but this is just all self realization from years of depression. I don’t even know who reads this blog anymore, but I hope whatever, if anything I said can help SOMEONE. Thanks for your time

Hey guys, I need help and support. I recently married my hubby and have gained about 30 lbs in the last 8 months. We want to have a baby but I refuse to get pregnant this heavy. I am at 175lbs and would like to be at 130 lbs. Therefore I need to lose 45lbs by August, since that is the month we chose to concieve. Can you please tell me what is the average weight loss on the tuna diet. And I must include I started going to the gym last week but will start the diet today. Please Help!!!

I lost about a pound a day so I’d say it’s totally doable to lose 45 lbs by August. I lost 40 lbs in less than 2 months. Good luck.

Hey, guys. I started the tuna diet yesterday. Today, my second day, I cut it down from my first day.

My first day, I ate one can before my 20 minute run on the elliptical, ate 3 cans after my weight lifting, ate one can at lunch and one can when I got home from school at 4:45. Today, I’ve just eaten one can of tuna and drank alot of water.

I started at 352, and I’ve lost 2 lbs in 2 days..I kid you not. It might just be water weight, but it’s still weight!

I’ve planned out my diet. Every day but Wednesday, I’ll eat 3 cans. On Wednesdays, I’ll eat one can. The only reason I ate 5 cans on my first day was because I had it in my head to lose weight and gain muscle at the same time — but now I’ve just decided to lose weight..

If any of you have AIM, feel free to contact me at kaosth30ry.

Hi sonnypatel. I good friend of mine did the tuna diet and lost 15 lbs in 3 days. Sure, alot of it was water weight, but he could fit into clothes much better and felt better as well. He ate only tuna in water and drank alot of water – no mayo, no soda – tuna and water. It’s only 3 days, you may wanna try it.

Im gonna try it. That would be a good start to my goal of 25.

I searched the internet and it seems Dave Draper talks about the tuna and water diet and says most bodybuilders of his era diet down using this diet.

thanks nic

Hi Guys. I have really enjoyed reading all of you posts. My best friend and I have started the tuna diet today. We are only eating a half a can a meal which would be one can a day. We are drinking those great new Crystal Lite Packs that you put in the water it makes the water go down much easier. I am hoping to lost 30 pounds but I guess 25 would be ok

Eat until satisfied, but not stuffed – would be my advice. From own experience I can say that you won’t be able to eat more than 4 or 5 cans/day because after two days you just won’t be hungry anymore.

Well im starting today. I just had to finish working these long hours and now that my schedule is back to normal, i can do the diet plus some exercise. I plan to to 30-45 minutes of cardio twice a day.

Does the tuna and water diet help you lose fat or weight or little of both. If i lose lets say 20 pounds will i have the same body look. Its not so much the weight i wanna lose. Its the fat… is this diet still for me? I would love to be at 200 pounds but be ripped. I assume most of the weight loss is water, which means when I start eating regularly (meaning not overeating), i wonder if all that weight will just come back on?

Oh well lets see what happens….

Keep in touch

Crystal i just plan to do the tuna thing for 3 days straight and see how i feel. I may take that to 6 days to give this diet a fair shot.

Kate,

Ive stopped drinking all together. I guess it depends how fast you wanna lose the weight. Its ok to have a couple of drinks here and there, but dont go overboard with it. And remember alcohol will dehydrate you, so just drink that much more water. I would say for every 2 drinks have a small bottle of water.

the way to eat tuna and enjoy it!
USE DIFFERENT SEASONINGS
one day i used roasted red pepper & garlic seasoning (u know those shakers u get)
next day i used lemon pepper
just keep seasoning it with different things and it’ll liven the diet up :)

Just to let you all know the Tuna diet came out as a weight lifters competition diet. It is a cleansing process (Ketosis) that removes body fat to create that “cut” look everyone is in a craze about. It actually supposed to be a 3 day process then evolves into a clean diet; Clean meats, clean veggies, clean everything until the competition. Be careful what you folks are doing! It could hurt you more then help you! Doing the Tuna Diet for 3 days is okay 5 days too, but for long periods of time it could be very unhealty for ones body. My input would be to do it for 3-5 days then bring in other meats (lean/clean) and veggies and some fruits (none after 2pm) until you’ve reached more then your goal. after that point eat healthy for life: Whole grains, natural sugars, lean meats and low calories. PLENTY OF WATER!!!

HI, I STARTED A TUNA DIET APR. 24.05. I LOST 3 POUNDS WITHIN 4 DAYS.WEDNESDAY 27, I WENT WALKING/JOGGING FOR THE FIRST TIME THE OTHER DAY. WHEN I STARTED I WAS THINKING THAT IT WON’T WORK BUT IT DOES. WHAT I DO IS THIS IF YOU WILL LIKE TO KNOW. I DRINK AND PROTEIN SHAKE IN THE MORNING
FOR LUNCH I EAT OATMEAL, 2 APPLES, AND A YOGURT. FOR DINNER I HAVE A CAN OF TUNA WITH A SMALL SALAD WITH NO DRESSING. JUST A LITTLE MIRCLE WHIP LIGHT.AND BY 6 I HAVE MY LAST YOGURT. I MAKE SURE THAT MY TUNA IS LIGHT. AND MY YOGURT IS LIGHT AS WELL.. WITH ONLY 80 CALS IN THEM. WHEN I MAKE MY TUNA SALAD I USE 2 TEA SPOONS OF MIRCLE WHIP. TO GIVE IT A LITTLE TASTE… I DON’T LOOK AT WHAT I EAT BUT HOW I EAT IT. I EAT UNTIL MY MIND SAYS IM FULL AND HAPPY WITH WHAT I HAVE JUST ATE. NOT ONLY DO I DO THAT… BUT I MAKE SURE I LOAD UP ON THE FIBER. THE TUNA AND THE FIBER IS THE KEY TO A GREAT WEIGHT LOSS. I HAVE LEARN IN ALL MY 10 YEARS OF DOING THE YO-YO’S. THAT IT’S IN THE MIND WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. I HAVE DONE EVERY THING FROM PILLS TO GYMS TO WATER AND BREAD NO GO. WHEN I TRIED THIS IT JUST WORKED OUT FOR ME. THIS IS LIKE A SLIM FAST THING YOU JUST HAVE TO MAKE UP YOUR MIND ON WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. I STARTED THIS ON THE 24 OF THIS MONTH. AND WHAT I DO TO KEEP IT GOING IS I DON’T THINK OF WHAT I EAT. I JUST EAT IT BECAUSE I KNOW I WILL LOSE 45 POUNDS IN NO TIME DOING THIS. AND I CUT OUT ALL THE REAL SUGAR.
AND DRINK 8 8oz GLASSES OF WATER A DAY. NOT ONLY THAT. I TRY TO TONE AREAS OF MY BODY THAT IS A PROBLEM FOR ME. MY ABS, HIPS AND TIGHTS WITH CARDIO AND WALKING. I DO 30 MINS OF ONE OF THOSE THINGS. AND 15 MINS. OF TOTAL BODY TONING. IF YOU WANT A ONE GREAT WORK OUT THAT DOES IT ALL. DO TAEBO. THAT REALLY WORKS ON YOUR TUMMY AND BUNNS.
WHEN YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO IT YOU CAN DO IT. BUT YOU HAVE TO REALLY KNOW THAT IT WILL WORK FOR YOU. IF YOU CHANGE THE WAY YOU EAT FOR 14 DAYS YOU CAN LOSE 8 TO 10 POUNDS OR MORE.I HAVE BEEN UP AND DOWN WITH MY WEIGHT. 2 YEARS AGO I WAS 250 AND IN 2004 BEFORE THE NEW YEAR I SAID NO MORE. I WAS AT 207 THEN. I DID NO MORE PILLS BUT WORK OUT TO GET TO 196. AND THEN I WENT ON THE TUNA DIET. IT WORKS. TRY IT FOR YOUR SELF AND SEE.

Will it work if i eat my tuna like this:
tuna. couple of mayo, celery, tomatoe, boiled egg, and onions chopped ofcourse. with non fat crackers, and water throught out the day, or instead of crackers whole wheat bread? is it too much? or should i just keep it plain tuna and water to get faster results? I am trying to loose at least 15 pds. I am 5′3″ and weigh 130. and have a 18month baby. tell me how much work, and how long do i need? please tell me i am tired of having this gut, ven before the baby i had it. i belive if i loose at least 15 or 20 that gut will at least not bother me so much.

Hi, I started the Tuna Diet on January 1st, however I drank tea with 2 sugars and had chicken and pork, and i still lost 2 stone/28 pounds in 3 months, and i did allow myself to have a treat every now and again, the most important thing to remember is to keep yourself active if your going to have sugar or something with a few carbs in it, celery is a good food to have because you burn off more calories digesting celery than celery contains.
As a reference to what ARLBAAN posted to get faster results you basically have to do more excersise, drinking water will make you feel full and so will a can or 2 of tuna, but watch out for the sugar cravings, I usually lie down when i have them just until they subside.
Good Luck

hello everyone! i started the tuna diet today. i am 5′3″ and i weigh 127 and would really like to lose 10 lbs in 20 days..is this possible? i have good muscle definition in my body but i have those pudgey areas around my stomach and thighs that need a little fat loss. i ate 5 egg whites and 1 slice of wheat toast for breakfast, 1 can of tuna for a snack, 1/2 a pouch of salmon for lunch, and 1 can of tuna for another snack and im gonna eat 1 pouch of salmon for dinner. i put a little mayo or mustard on them to help the taste.
i work out 5-6 days a week in the morning lifting weights or doing about 1hr of cardio so i need some type of carbs so i dont feel sick so thats why i ate 1 slice of wheat toast w/ my egg whites for breakfast…is that bad? Is there something else i should eat instead of bread to get carbs?
if anyone has advice or just wants to talk about there diet please chat back!

HEY ARLBAAN! I totally understand how u feel. i weigh almost the same as u and i am the same height too…no baby yet though. i think if u eat ur tuna like that u will still see results but of course u will c faster results if u eat it plain….but that can get old. i eat mine with mayo or mustard. celery and mustard have little to no calories so pile them on. mayo and eggs can b kinda high but maybe u can eat the egg w/ no yolk to cut down on fat and calories. i would try not to eat the bread or crackers but if u have to have something then i would eat only a few of the wheat ritz crackers but dont eat them any later in the day(passed 2 oclock)…only for lunch and a snack. i think onions and tomatoes should b ok also but i would try to eat the tuna as plain as possible especially at dinner times! well i hope ive helped please chat back any time!

Hiya,
I’m on day 4 and feel okay now. Yesterday was hard. I felt so weak and sick, I fell down the staires on the bus. Very embarrassing. I’m eating a tin of Tuna and a little lettuce and cucumber mixed up twice a day. Yesterday (day 3) was so bad I wanted to go on a boat to the middle of the sea and strangle every last tuna fish in the world haha.

I think the fatigue was due to coming off all the sugars and fats. This diet isn’t really about what you put into your system, its about what you DON’T put in. It seems the protein in the Tuna just keeps you alive and with a bit of energy – whilst not having any other nutrients going into your body.

I started to take some calcium and magnesium tablets yesterday. My house mate insisted. He said ‘Dale, when I was in the Buddhist monastery in Thailand I fasted for 7 days on just water and didn’t look half as bad as you do right now!’ haha. So the results? Well after 4 days my jeans are loose and my sides trimmer. My girlfriend is freaking out and keeps trying to guilt trip me into eating rice or roast potatoes.

I’m gonna do it for 7 days and then switch to the Atkins diet I think. I’ve been dreaming about eating chicken. Yummy. You’re more that welcome to email me if you want to chat about how much you hate tuna now too :)

Hello to all from tennessee! Well this is my 3rd day on the tuna diet and i have lost 2 lbs so far which is impressive to me because i was traveling today and didn’t eat all that great but the 1st 2 days i did really well. tomorrow im going back strick. i believe this diet is really gonna work but i know that if any of us that are on this diet lose weight and then stop the diet all the weight will come back unless we eat healthy. we dont have to eat just tuna….grilled chicken or fish and vegies and healthy “clean” foods will keep our weight off but we all have to just stay motivated and have willpower…and just have a bad snack once or twice a week but just watch our serving sizes and dont go overboard. it can be hard i know but its nice to be able to chat with others about it and to hear other success stories. well if anyone wants to chat id love to. TUNA ROCKS AND JESUS LOVES U ALL!

And Alexis I love Jesus and i love you, you did motivate me to start tommorow… jlove, you wont gain the weight back unless you pig out like crazy. that diet worked with me lost 20kgs, and a year after stopping i gained a total of 10kgs… so now i wanna get rid of those 10kgs! I’m 171cm, 68kgs, starting off tomorow (If Allah is willing!) will have yogurt in the morning cuz they say it speeds up the process of burning fat, tuna in the afternoon, lotsa water, and Green tea cuz they say it speeds up the metabolism!

Anyway Good luck y’all… it’s tough I know :( but worth it i guess!!! :)

My 21st birthday is coming up and I am starting the tuna diet today (june 1st) Along with tuna, I plan on drinking water (ice cold- your body burns more calories while bringing the water down to body temp. or at least that is what i hear) and I am also doing my 20 min pilates tape once a day. I am about 5′10 and 155-160 lbs. Lets see how much I can lose.

Hey, Im glad this thread made it. Its what pushed me to try this Tuna and Water Diet. I first heard of this diet from my driving instructor, he mentioned his friend went on this diet and said he lost miraculous pounds. I am 17, 6′2 300 pounds. Most people cant believe I weigh that much, but it is killer on the self esteem. I have been on the tuna diet for 2 days and plan to stick to it untill my goal : 240. I work out in the gym 4 times a week, and do cardio atleast 20 mins each time, then weightlift.

Today Is june 5th, Does anyone think its possible to get down to 240 by late june?

Hey yall! I just wanted to let you all know that this diet is a deceptive conspiracy feeding off of its vulnerable victims. Three years ago I was a good lookin 5’5’’ 265 lb gal. But then one day I was walking down the street and some good lookin guy said I was “swimming in lardâ€?. I went home and looked up the word lard in my dictionary and it said it meant fat. So then, I felt really bad about that, and then started floating in and out with bouts of depression for about a year, and gained a whopping 95 lbs. So now I was 360 lbs and hating myself, until one day I found the diet that would change my life, or at least I thought. It was called the tuna diet. My life had been saved. So then about two years ago I started out on this diet. I went on the diet for about 10 months, eating nothing but tuna and water. Within that 10 months, I had lost about 70 lbs. So now I was 290 lbs. Getting closer and closer to what I was before this emotional roller coaster commenced. I was so excited, but I was still fat and still feeling like a lard butt. So anyway, then I went off the diet for about 2 months just because I thought I was getting closer and I didn’t need to watch as much as before. Well in those 2 months I gained back 50 lbs. So now I was 340 lbs, this was a year ago. Then I started getting frustrated and went back into my bouts with depression for 6 months. I then gained 80 more lbs, which then put me at 420 lbs just 6 months ago. Well needless to say, I went to a dietitian and a personal trainer for a month. They got me down to 400 lbs, but then I moved to New Mexico and never stopped eating. Within the last 5 months, I’ve ballooned to 530 lbs, and you know what? Hey here’s what I say about fat: If you can’t beat it, join it! I like being fat! There’s no stopping me now! My goal is to reach the 600 mark within the few months, and I owe it all to the tuna diet. Thank you so much for giving me a whole lot more of me! By the way, my husband loves the blub all over him. He loves it! And I love it too! I love my lard butt and that guy that told me I was swimming in lard when I was 265, I’d like to give him a piece of my mind now. I’m swimming in a lot more lard now buddy! Thanks all! Good luck with all of your weight losing!

Hello to all! Im glad Dan that you are doing good on your diet. This diet does work because I lost 3lbs in 3 days. I only went on it for 3 days last month but this month Im doing it for a week maybe more if i can stick to it. Pretty much i lose a pound a day but thats because i am 5′3″ and weigh 127lbs and i only have those last 5 to 10 lbs to lose. Anyone who has more to lose will probally lose more than a pound each day. I eat 1/2 a piece of fruit and 1/2 a low carb protien bar for breakfast and then tuna and vegies for lunch and dinner. I drink lots of water and have coffee or propel every once in a while and i run 5 days a week anywhere from 4 to 8 miles a day…..the running helps BIG TIME! I also lift weights 3 to 4 days a week… working out and doing cardio will definitely make u lose more weight faster while on this diet. Well i know it can be tough to stick with but good luck to all and please feel free to e-mail me if anyone wants any advice on eating or weight training or if u just want to chat about ur diet. God Bless u all!

Hey guys, I’ve been on this Tuna Diet for almost 3 weeks now. I have a can of light tuna with a tspn of Light Miracle Whip, and I drink about 5 litres of water a day (sorry, I’m Canadian!). To be honest, I haven’t lost any pounds….but apparently, I’ve gained A LOT of muscle. I had my body composition done 2 weeks ago, and I was at 22% body fat…I’ll go back in another couple weeks and find out how I did.
If I did lose a lot of body fat (and changed it to muscle), it was because I go to the gym 5-6 days a week, and weight train for 30 mintues with doing cardio for 45 minutes. I only drink water and protein shakes (skim milk and protein powder). I also shelled out some cash for supplements. I HIGHLY suggest that you try drinking green tea if you’re sick of water….green tea flushes your system quicker than water….and it’s really good for you. I wish everyone luck…and in turn…wish me luck!!! :)

randy your flaw is that you drink milk and protein shakes, they both have sugar. this is why you have not lost any weight.

Well anyways ive been a vacation and have been eating like shiet, im up to 295 again, but plan to continue this diet tommorrow for my goal of 240

Well Dan, the thing is that I don’t eat enough calories throughout the day really. If I REALLY try, I take in about 2000 calories a day, but burn over that in a day (with cardio and weight training)…so in reality…I’m losing fat, but turning it to muscle as well..right now. If I don’t increase the calories…I’ll be losing muscle as well.

Dan back here, after a strange summer of weight flucuation and trying this tuna diet, all i can say it that i did lose 10 poundsin about 7 days, back in early june. I was down to 295. I Couldnt stand tuna so i ate lite, eating lite wasnt enough, i was back up to 305. Around june 20th i finally got it together and run everyday and down to 285, my goal is getting closer each step i ttake while i run, I eat about 1/3 of what i used to ea, and its working flawlessly.

I warn you the tuna diet is an extreme version of atkins, you will lose weight, if you can stay on it, but you WILL < No questions about it, GAIN it all back. I recommend eating less and extreme cardio for atleast 20 minutes a day, and you WILL lose weight AND KEEP IT OFF. in 17 days i have lost 20 pounds. losing as much as 2 pounds a day. Good Luck, this will be my last post at this board.

This will be my last post on this thread, i have finally after 3 years of weightloss struggle have gotten a grip on it. Good luck, and God Bless….

I heard about this tuna diet from a body builder. I think it’s purpose is really to lower you body fat percentage rather than loose lbs. However if you lower your body fat %, you probably will loose weight. I’m towards the higher end of a healthy weight range for my age and height (140lbs, 5′5, age 20)Why this diet interests me is that even though I don’t need to loose weight, my body fat percentage is on the high side.
I ran cross country in high school (3.1miles 5-6days a week) and I lost weight withought even watching my diet, but I’ve noticed that even then I had this pudgy area around my stomach and thighs. I was like a twig in size but I had very litte muscle mass. I had rock hard abs but they were hidden under fat. So I’m going to try this tuna thing out (along with aerobic exercise and some weight training) in hopes of lowering my body fat % because I don’t want to be flabby but I also don’t want to be too bulked up.
I hope I explained my viewpoint well enough for anyone who reads this. Feel free to ask me questions though I admit I’m not a proffesional in this area so please understand that what might work for me may not work for someone else.

I have been basing my diet on tunafish for about the last year and a half. I know from experience that the tuna diet really does work. In my first month on the diet I lost a total of 15 lbs. And since then I have gone from a size 9 pants to a size 3. I misut admit tho, in order to be able to stick to the diet, you have to be a die hard tuna fan. There were plenty of times that i’ve had to force myself to eat it, and honestly, it isn’t that bad straight out of the can. I now mix in vegetables such as cucumbers and tomatos and sometimes pickles and onions as well jus to change thigns up a bit. Good luck to anyone trying out this diet, stick to it and you won’t be sorry! : )

This is my second attempt at the tuna diet. The first time I ate strictly tuna(on bread every other day) and water. I lost 13 punds in 16 days. I gained all back over the last 6 months.

Starting the second attempt at the diet I was 201 lbs. I started 5 days ago and have lost 8 lbs. The first three days I ate Tuna and drank water, thats it. I am also running 2 miles per day to accelerate the loss. I am now eating some fruits, like a banana, grapes, watermelon, etc. in small amounts. And making a tuna sandwich every other day.

If you plan on attempting this diet take this advice. If you only eat tuna and drink water, do not exercise becuase you will feel like a walking zombie and you could really hurt yourself. Howvever if you do not exercise you may be ok for a few days but try to add in a little fruit snack or some greens. Trust me your body needs them. Stay loyal to the water, maybe a diet snapple every now and then(they are great compared to water).

I will post my results,

:start 201, current 193, time 5 days.

:first 3 days, tuna and water only( + vitamins)
rest of the time tuna, fruits, and greens. Water , Snapple, and occasionly Gatorade(hi in carbs and calories)

Oh yea I am doing this becuase I have a bet with a friend, lose to 180 by Sept. 17th or I have to pay for all the alcohol on the cruise, if I lose it he does. Got to have some motivation I guess.
Good luck, stay healthy, EXERCISE you lazy bastards.

I didn’t even know there was a following for this type of diet. I lost major weight changing my eating habits to high protein low carb. I would eat the tuna with balsamic vinegar on wheat bread (You still need some cards). I would eat chicken breast grilled. Also turkey burgers grilled. The key to this diet is to try and change it up a little. Also eat some crap every 7 days of so after the first 2 weeks. Your body will find a way to store anything. So you want to shock or kick start you metabolism with a drastic change. The diet doe’s work but you have to stick with it and do cardio some weight training. Good luck everyone

I have been on the tuna diet (kinda) for a good 2 months now. i have mad eit my primary food. but i add veggies and, most of all, hot peppers – they will up your metabolism by 50%, water is good, and eating fruit works too.. mayeb it’s just me, but as far as i know, i can switch to anything and it’s not as intensive, but i dropped a good 20 LBS in that time frame, and i tried going back to other stuff, and nothing came back. even if i eat a chocolate bar. i think the tuna diet is very good, but guys make it gradual and mix it with other things. also i take multi vitamins to avoid the vitamin problems… i saw my doctor and took blood samples, and got my results last week, and he said that everything was good, actually, better than the average in most cases. just be careful guys with trying to lose too much too fast and rememebr if you’re fat and you loose too much weight too fast your skin will not have enough time to adapt and you’ll look like a big pile of cookie dough in no time, which is far more disgusting than being ultra fat. good luck and be healthy – oh and banish sodas from your diet, all of them.

Woah! This site is crazy. Google is awesome!
Today is day one of my tuna diet.
I’m mixing it w/a tiny bit of mayo/mustard-pepper/and relish. Super cold out of the fridge, no bread.
I love black Starbucks coffee w/2 splendas or sugar free Red Bull in the morning-
I’m going to add veggies into the diet, and take one day off. Maybe do salmon too..
Ideal would be to lose 30lbs. But i’ll be happy with 15lbs. I’m 5′9 169lbs. w/a gut.
I hope I don’t lose my big ass though…haha.
I’ll post again in a few days…

Day One: started at lunch time yesterday. It was ok, but completely blew it at dinner. Trouble is that i live with my grandma and my parents have never really encouraged crash dieting, so i’m going to have fight on my hands, especially around dinner time weekdays, and when im at home with my parents, they’re not going to understand! have to eat my brekkie in secret and my lunch and then get ready for lecture 4000 on healthy heating from my loving, relatively heealthy, but overweight parents. Other than that it seems ok, not puking yet!

The tuna diet does work. Yes. I began it 3 weeks ago and felt the pounds fall off. Not only does the diet work, if you dont want to stay on the All tuna diet, it really gets you geared towards eating less and eating healthy. It taught me to be very concious of what (nutritional facts) is going on. Do the tuna diet for about a week/ two weeks if you dont really like. Then just make sure youre getting less than what you should be and you will see a difference. I have went from a size 9/10 to a 3/4.

I have been on the Tuna Diet for 1 month and 10 days. I have lost a total of 24 pounds. I did exercise 3-4 times a week, ran 2-3 miles each session. drank gatorade and water, and had tuna on bread or bagel. Boiled egg whites for breakfast.
Vacation is in one week and I am passed my goal.

Start- 201 lbs. July 28
Current 176 lbs

Want to lose 6 more by next weekend, crash diet time!

Good luck, and it does get you in the mindset of eating healthy!

OHMIGOSH i know some girl who did the tuna diet… it REALLY works… she lost alot of weight and she looks awesome… the only thing that she did wrong was the lack of eXCeRSiSe! after she lost all that weight, her skin was pretty loose and dare i say flabby… but the point is that she did lose the weight she wanted… i think i am going to try it… i also have a friend who takes a bottle of water and adds oatmeal to it, shakes it up, and drinks that. it sounds pretty gross, but she says that after the oatmeal sinks to the bottom of the bottle it tastes like regular water… and since oatmeal is basically all fiber, it helps your body burn fat… or so she says… im gonna try both… at the same time… lets see what happens…
